A couple months ago, I had a fun + cozy bedroom photo session with a new client family in their Worthington home. Mom — let’s call her “A” — was the one who I spoke with on the phone about planning her session. She didn’t hesitate to open up about her reasons for wanting an at-home photo session, versus waiting until the Spring or the Fall. She was so gracious to agree to a little interview once our session was wrapped up. Here’s what she shared with me!
What were your main reasons for booking a photo session? What were you hoping to have captured?
2021 was a hard time for us. We welcomed our daughter at just 29 weeks, and she was in the hospital for over a month. When I think about the times that bring us joy, and embody the feelings of togetherness as a family, I think of our home. We create so many lifelong memories in this space and that’s exactly what I wanted to capture.
When I first started talking to Daisy about planning our family photo session, I knew one thing for certain: it was very important for me to have the session in our home. One really special time we look forward to are Saturday and Sunday morning cuddles, when everyone wakes up and piles in our bed. Still in our jammies, we cuddle, read, and laugh. This is us.
What did the experience feel like before & during your session?
From our first conversation, Daisy was so supportive of making our home the focus of our session and helped bring this vision to life. She even helped us pick outfits from what we already had in our closets, and gave us quick feedback via text which I really appreciated. My husband and I both work crazy schedules so shopping for new outfits wasn’t on the table.
When Daisy arrived to our home, my son immediately took interest in her and couldn’t wait to show her his room. He’s high energy, which made me nervous about how the session would stay under control but Daisy worked very well with him. She kept him engaged and let him be silly, which resulted in so many natural moments which truly captured his personality. These are the moments I want to hold onto as he gets older.
It wasn’t long before we all felt completely comfortable and forgot about this being a photo session. We did the things we normally do on a Saturday morning – cuddled, laughed, and read books in bed. My husband, who doesn’t really look forward to these things, said, “aw, this is fun!”
What are some of your favorite photos we captured together?
My husband had one special photo request: one of my son and him shaving. Daisy loved the idea and made sure to capture it during our session. This is one of the images we knew we wanted printed, because it’s a moment we want to preserve through the years. This is a photo that will travel with us, no matter what house we are in. It will hang in my son’s future home someday. This is overwhelming to think about – these pictures are so much more than right now.
Was there anything about the experience that surprised you?
Daisy did something very simple, but so often overlooked: she took a few pictures of just my husband alone. She said she notices how dads sometimes get put in the shadows when the focus is on mom and kids. She captured such stunning pictures of him. He later brought this up to me and said that was the first time he felt ‘seen’ in a long time. He said it felt so good and that he actually got emotional about it. He expressed his journey as a Dad and things he has gone through and it made us both realize that dad’s stories are so important. Daisy’s highlight of my husband was so impactful that it opened up a very important dialogue for our marriage and family.
What advice would you give to another family who might be on the fence about booking a photo session this year?
As our lives get busier and busier, it can be hard to find “the right time” to book family photos. I have also asked myself, “what is the need? I have 2000 pictures on my phone!” Yet, I am so thankful every time we do this. There is something so special about seeing your story told through someone else’s perspective. Daisy’s artistic creativity captured the most simple yet special moments, and helped us have them printed so they are never lost in our phones. These photos will last a lifetime and on. Put any fears away and go for it. You will not regret it, ever.
